About Fishing For Freedom

Fishing for Freedom is a no-entry-fee buddy fishing tournament that pairs volunteer boaters with America’s warriors to celebrate the freedoms we love with those who provide them. Volunteer boaters share a wonderful day of camaraderie on a beautiful lake with America’s real life heroes in an attempt to show them how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make that allow us to enjoy the freedoms of the greatest country in the world.

A Celebration of Freedom

American Warriors, we would like to invite you out for a weekend of camaraderie and outdoor recreation. Fishing for Freedom is a celebration of the freedoms we love with those who provide them for us. It is an opportunity for you to spend a day on the lake with some of the best bass anglers in the country. Fishing for Freedom brings together warriors with volunteer boaters for a day of tournament bass fishing in a relaxed, fun-filled celebration of the outdoors. This event is made possible by volunteers and paid for by local and corporate sponsors and private donations. All warrior participants will receive a pack of tackle donated by our sponsors and top finishers will receive trophies for their accomplishments. Dinner Saturday night, Breakfast Sunday morning, and BBQ lunch after the weigh-in Sunday will all be provided. Lodging for warriors on Saturday and Sunday nights will be provided.. We will contact the warriors two weeks prior to the event with your lodging assignments.

WHAT TO BRING? Although you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own fishing tackle, volunteer boaters will have rods, reels, lures, and life vests for your use during the tournament. All that warriors need to bring is a valid Missouri fishing license that you can obtain online here, or any tackle shop throughout Missouri, a snack or sandwich for while you are on the lake, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing in case of inclement weather. The one-day fishing license will work and costs only $7.00. If you are a recovering wounded warrior, or a rehabilitating service member, no fishing license is required.

This event is open to all active duty, reserve, national guard, and wounded warriors (service members who are currently recovering and rehabilitating from injuries or who were wounded fighting the Global War on Terrorism and who have returned to their units or transitioned to civilian life), and all GWOT veterans who have served oversees fighting the GWOT. All angling skill levels are welcomed from those who have never touched a rod and reel to the accomplished bass fishermen. Register today

Hope to see you at this year’s event. Thank You for your service and sacrifice to keep this country free.

What It All Means:

Come out and share a wonderful day of camaraderie on a beautiful lake with America’s real life heroes in an attempt to show them how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make that allow us to enjoy the freedoms of the greatest country in the world.

Take it from a soldier on just how much it means to them.

“You don’t understand just how much it meant to me."

I would first of all like to thank you for giving me some of my life back.   I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed myself and was at peace.   The weekend of September 18 and 19 was my first escape from my nightmares and also the first time in a very long time that I felt I could take my guard down and be myself. It was the first Wounded Warrior Fishing Bass Tournament that you and I ever participated in.  We met on September 18 at the hotel where we grilled and just got to know one another.  At that time, we (the wounded warriors) did not know who our fishing tournament partners would be and I knew that night I really wanted the opportunity to get to know you. And I don’t know if it was sure luck or something else but we had the best time of our lives.  We did not catch anything but “smallies”, but yet I got the best therapy I have ever gotten since June 2008 when I came back from Iraq.  Due to my PTSD, I do not do very many things with complete strangers, but now I have a true friend.  You showed me the best time of my life and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

“You don’t understand just how much it meant to me and how much you mean to me know and I gratefully thank you and can’t show you my gratitude because it is too large.”  You showed me there are TRUE HEROS still in this world.  This is how I see you now.  This was one giant leap for my recovery and that is what we were there to do.  Our sole purpose of the wounded warrior program is to heal and that is exactly what you helped me do.   Thank you for the opportunity to go to this very special event and being there as a friend instead of a tournament partner.  Did you know the whole time I was with you in that boat and at the barbeque I did not have to take any of my anxiety medication?  Hanging out with you put me at ease and I have learned to take that ease and use it for everyday life.  That is something a doctor CAN NOT teach or put in a bottle.  I sincerely thank you for being you and showing me I have it in myself to get better and being there to just show me a good time fishing which I enjoyed more then I can put into words.

Sincerely,
A Grateful Warrior
